Your high school basketball career is a big part of your story. From countless hours of practice and team memories to game nights under the gym lights, your accomplishments deserve to be remembered. Incorporating basketball into your high school senior pictures is a meaningful way to celebrate your dedication, hard work, and passion for the game.

I had the honor of creating Andrew’s senior portraits, and incorporating basketball into his session was an important part of telling his high school story. Here are three essential elements I recommend including when planning basketball senior pictures.

1. THE BASKETBALL

It may seem obvious, but the basketball itself is an essential part of your senior portraits. Whether you’re holding the ball, sitting courtside, or incorporating it into a more creative pose, it immediately tells part of your athletic story. Even if you don’t have access to your school gymnasium, a basketball is an easy way to personalize your senior pictures and celebrate your time on the court.

2. THE HIGH SCHOOL GYMNASIUM

Think about how many hours you’ve spent inside your high school gymnasium. From early morning practices and team workouts to Friday night games and unforgettable moments with teammates, this is where so much of your basketball story unfolded.

If possible, incorporating your high school basketball court into your senior pictures creates a meaningful connection to your high school years. Most schools are accommodating when requests are made in advance. However, never assume you can simply show up and use the gymnasium.

As a professional senior portrait photographer in Cincinnati, I take care of the location planning and permissions ahead of time. Whether I’m photographing a basketball player, football player, or another student athlete, I always contact the school, request permission, and schedule an appropriate time to use the facility.

3. THE GAME-DAY SUIT

One of the things I love about photographing basketball players is that many are already accustomed to dressing up on game days. For many high school basketball teams, wearing a suit or dress clothes on game day is part of the tradition. Why not incorporate that polished look into your senior pictures?

A well-fitted suit creates a completely different look from your basketball uniform and adds a timeless, sophisticated element to your senior portraits. Whether photographed in the gym, sitting courtside, or in a more traditional portrait setting, these images capture another side of your personality and style.

BONUS: To add another personalized touch to his basketball senior portraits, I used colored gels in his school’s colors, creating dramatic lighting that made his images stand out while adding a unique connection to his high school.

MOST IMPORTANTLY: PRINT AND PRESERVE YOUR SENIOR PORTRAITS!

Your high school basketball career represents years of dedication, friendships, accomplishments, and memories. These moments deserve more than a folder of digital files that may eventually get lost or forgotten.

At Minks Photography, I believe senior portraits should become tangible pieces of your family’s history. From professionally designed albums to beautiful wall portraits, heirloom-quality printed artwork allows you and your family to enjoy these memories for generations to come.

Your high school story deserves to be preserved as art, not just stored on a computer.
